Any Body, Every Body - Call for artists, makers, participants!

What do all humans - and even some extraterrestrials - have in common? We all have bodies!

In October, Rhizome will host Any Body, Every Body – part accumulation, part celebration, part exhibition, part amalgamation, part participation, part congregation – recognizing the fun and frustration of living with a body.

1.) Exhibition and Collaboration: DC-area artists who are selected will contribute in two ways - by exhibiting 2D and 3D work that relates to the body in some way – any way; as well as contributing to an exquisite corpse game. Each artist will complete a body part at home that will be combined with those of other participants during a collaborative session. Recycled and upcycled materials are encouraged. Get your friends, neighbors and kids to help with this part!

2.) Community Project: Participants of all ages will create experimental sculptures inspired by anatomy using found and repurposed materials at this drop-in activity. Saturday, Oct. 14, 11-1pm

3.) Celebration: Invite people to join the fun! Check out the exhibition and take pictures with your faves! Join in a surrealist game! Enjoy potluck-style snacks and beverages for this gathering. Sunday, Oct. 22, 3-5 pm

Please submit photos of existing 2D and 3D work for the exhibition to anybodyeverybodyproject@gmail.com by Sept. 23. There is no fee to apply. We’ll let you know by Sept. 25 which piece(s) will be included and which body part you can start making to bring in on Oct. 4.

This quick turnaround ensures that the project maintains a spirit of spontaneity and experimentation.

Thank you for participating - we can’t wait to get started with this project!

Important Dates:
Artwork drop off and collaborative session: Wednesday, Oct, 4, 6-8 pm (or by appointment)

Community Project: Saturday, Oct. 14, 11-1 pm

Exhibition Celebration: Sunday, Oct. 22, 3-5 pm

Existence as Protest: Call for trans, queer, non-binary, and all gender expansive artists

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MIDNIGHT ON SUNDAY AUG. 13

In the rise of anti-trans legislation across the country, queer folx are looking for community, support, and acceptance. Trans individuals are losing their rights to healthcare, expression, and existence with the rise of American Fascism. Queer culture’s expressions of joy are under attack across the country through legislation and daily bigotries. Now, more than ever, queer and trans folx are in need of deeper community, bonds through shared experience, and platforms to assert our existence.

This group exhibition is open to trans, queer, gender non conforming and gender expansive artists of the DC area. The goal of this exhibition is to highlight the multifaceted nature of the trans, queer, and nonbinary experience: To vent our struggles, profess our joys and euphorias, and to be heard in our journeys.

Community Supported Agriculture ART! (CSA)

Rhizome DC and Guilded Freelancer's Cooperative are partnering to create a Community Supported Art program.

We are inviting proposals from members of the DMV arts community.

9 artists will be selected by a team of curators. Participating artists will create 50 “shares” for the program. A typical share will consist of a work of art/object of artistic production — multiples are encouraged, however creative ideas that translate your practice into this format are also welcome. For example a limited edition of vinyl 7", a run of screen-prints, a series of small tea cups, a run of photographs, a performance produced just for the occasion, letterpress editions of a poem or short story, or even 50 small original paintings. Please reach out to us with questions about what might work. Collaborations between artists are also possible.

People who purchase a subscription will receive their shares at 3 pick-up events over the course of the season, which we expect to run from July - November 2021.

Each artist will receive a $1,500 stipend - half up front and half upon completion of the work. Each will also receive benefits from Guilded Freelancers' Co-op, including: 6 months of primary care; vision and dental coverage; and subsidized tax preparation. (We will arrange a meeting for each artist with Guilded to work out which of those benefits would be desirable and to elaborate on exactly what they will entail.) Each artist will also be invited to participate in a group exhibition of all participating artists at Rhizome later in 2021. The hope is that this initiative will also facilitate new relationships between local artists and art lovers that might extend beyond the program itself.

Over the last 20 years, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy seasonal food directly from local farms. With the same buy-local spirit in mind, Community Supported Art is a similar endeavor to support local art, artists and collectors. It’s been replicated in over thirty cities in North America in recent years. Our program is modeled in part on the Community Supported Art project created by Springboard for the Arts and mnartists.org in Minnesota.

We are very excited about this model as a way to provide reliable support to working artists that is replicable across a wide variety of contexts.

To apply for consideration please submit the following materials via email to dcartcsa@gmail.com by 11:59pm on Friday April 16.
-Name, address, phone number, email address
-A brief artist’s statement and proposal for the work you would create for the CSA project. Please be as detailed as you can be about exactly what you are proposing to create and why it would be a good fit for the CSA. (One page max)
-LINKS to up to 10 images and/or up to 3 audio/video examples and/or writing samples. These links can be to a Google Drive or Dropbox folder; if that is the case, please set access to the folder to "anyone with the link" so that we can easily share the work samples with our curatorial team. Please do not attach the work sample files to the email.

Selected artists will be notified by Monday May 3.

Notes:
*Pickup dates are tentatively scheduled for July, September, and Novemeber. We will work with the group of artists selected to create a delivery schedule that works for all involved. (We realize that July might be a tight turnaround for some people and will work to accommodate those needs.)
*The stipend award is intended to assist with the production costs of the pieces.
*Work should be easily transportable.

Please contact us at dcartcsa@gmail.com if you have questions about what a viable project might look like for you, or any questions about the program or application in general.
