Concert: Freezing Black Rain (Tashi Dorji/Tyler Damon Duo + Heart of the Ghost), Noelle Tolbert/Hanna Olivegren

FREEZING BLACK RAIN QUINTET -  avant-garde guitar improvisor from Asheville NC via Bhutan TASHI DORJI, in a duo with Bloomington, IN percussionist TYLER DAMON,
in a quintet with DC/BALT free jazz trio Heart of the Ghost (LUKE STEWART, JARRETT GILGORE, IAN McCOLM).. not to be missed!

TASHI DORJI grew up in Bhutan, on the eastern side of the Himalayas. Residing in Asheville since 2000 and soaking up a vast array of music. Along the way, Dorji developed a playing style unbound by tradition, yet with a direct line to intuitive artistry. His recordings feature improvisations that spasmodically grow along tangential, surprising paths. All references break loose during a composition, as Dorji keys into his own inner world.

” It is a highly personalised reconciliation of modes that negates any particular style while announcing a new talent in solo guitar improvisation” – The Wire, 2014

“You could draw comparisons to such six-string mavericks as Derek Bailey and Bill Orcutt, but the improvised solo pieces here really exist in a universe all their own. Beautiful, otherworldly stuff.” – Aquarium Drunkard

“the range of creative solutions he’s found while trying to avoid the well-worn paths of instrumental guitar music is thrilling”- Pitchfork

“It’s a bit early to say that Dorji is a new, major player. But he definitely is, in the Derek Bailey sense, a player; a man who wants to get in there and work it out, a musician motivated by making music” – Dusted Magazine

“[…] his solo showcase […] shows that he can play dynamically, fading up from near nothingness to passages where his surging attack fills all available space like a deploying airbag.” – Wire Magazine

HEART OF THE GHOST is an improvisational unit from the Baltimore/Washington area. Comprised of Jarrett Gilgore (Alto Saxophone), Luke Stewart (Double Bass) and Ian McColm (Drums), this group is the culmination of years of encircling orbits. Collectively encompassing a massive variety of interests and collaborators and themselves known players in the circles of improvised music, these three find common ground within their individual vocabularies: an aim to deconstruct and reshape canonized creative tropes into a new & stunning language.

NOELLE TOLBERT - Hailing from Philly, Noelle Tolbert has blossomed her artistic journey in Baltimore and has become a ruby inside of this small city. Noelle is a movement explorer with an ongoing practice spanning hip-hop, popping, house, modern, ballet, and movement research technique. Her evolving practice is fed by poetry, improvisational writing, and performance art.

Noelle will perform with Baltimore's HANNA OLIVEGREN, a singer and composer from Stockholm, Sweden born in 1987. She started studying music at the age of ten at a choir school and from there went on to study voice more individually in high school, pre-collage school and took her bachelor degree in 2014 at The Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Hanna’s passion has always been to explore the different colors and textures of her voice and works with both improvised and composed music. Currently she is a member in three different groups, composes, arranges concerts, workshops and freelances. The groups are ZOMES, H.O.W and Silence Blossoms. ZOMES is a duo based in Baltimore, with Asa Osborne (former member of Lungfish). This collaboration is also the reason Hanna moved to Baltimore in November 2015. H.O.W is Hanna’s solo project where she is both the composer and producer. She is releasing solo music under this name and recently started a group in Baltimore with Zach Branch, Matt Lampart & Ines Nasarra. Silence Blossoms is a group based in UK and Sweden that works with poetry, improvisation and British folk music. The other members in group in Gus Loxbo and Sam Andreae.
