Unthings (New Session)

Unthings provides children with the opportunity to explore, create, and learn — in groups and individually. Each week a team of two to three artists/mentors will provide materials, ideas, and guidance in a supportive and creative environment. Kids will have the space and time to engage with and explore their own ideas and questions, while learning and creating collaboratively.

In previous sessions we made collaborative sculptures using materials such as wire, small objects, magazines, and words; collected natural objects to make mobiles; made sound circuits and light boxes; harvested and planted crops at the nearby urban farm; wrote collaborative stories and poems; worked with natural/local materials to make eco-prints with steam bundling; made a harp; composed and performed graphic and text scores for vocal music; and drew and bound books with a visiting artist.

Activities in the upcoming sessions:
-Gesture drawings and mark making with found tools and homemade walnut ink using watercolor painted palettes
-Printmaking with eucalyptus: steam bundling and cooking silk and wool
-The solar dye pot: using weeds and windfalls to create color from our own landscape
-Word games: story-telling (oral and written) generated in various ways, making a chapbook out of student work
-Improv games
-Making short animated films
-Cooking/fermentation
-Worm composting/compost tea
-Tending seedlings for community garden project
