Rhizome is Home - video documentary

We want to share with you this 40-minute documentary lovingly directed by Tatev Sargsyan. In 2021, spurred on by the prospect of Rhizome having to relocate, Tatev headed up efforts to secure funding from Humanities DC to undertake an oral history project focused on Rhizome in the larger context of the precarious existence of spaces that foster expression and connection. Tatev completed the oral histories and in 2022 again received funding from Humanities DC to build the oral histories into a video documentary. The results are truly wonderful, capturing the spirit of Rhizome from a range of perspectives, and incorporating so much amazing footage recorded here over our first 7(!) years. We are so grateful to Tatev and the crew she assembled to bring this project to life. We we would be honored for community members to watch when you have a few minutes....

Rhizome DC Oral Histories

To preserve Rhizome stories, we conducted series of oral history interviews and presented performances from the community in the summer of 2021. In these interviews, the community of Rhizome DC weave their own journeys into the story of experimental/improvised/DIY arts in the margins of the nation’s capital.

These interviews were recorded with support from Humanities DC and DC Oral History Collaborative. All interview audios, transcripts, and detailed indexes are available through DC Public Library People's Archives in the Dig DC collection. We are also looking to combine these audio and video materials into a short documentary about Rhizome DC. Some video files of these interviews were lost in a hard drive mishap. Additional footage, flyers, and photos are used to supplement audio of those interviews.
