Have you been looking for an artistic outlet for your frustration and anger? Have you thought about writing songs addressing injustice in the world but don’t know where to start? Maybe you’ve got a great idea, but could use some support to complete your vision. This is the workshop for you!
Over five sessions we will explore the history and tradition of using music to speak truth to power.
You will:
Complete at least one original song. (You don’t have to have any experience and there will be options for those who do not play instruments.)
Receive weekly songwriting exercises, prompts, and assignments.
Participate in guided discussions and shareouts
Receive listening assignments and a playlist
Be invited to at least one group outing to an open mic
Be included on the class compilation if desired

What are some tactics used in Arts Activism?
Explore your personal calling.
Lyric techniques and song mapping.
Erin Frisby is a veteran of the DC music scene. They grew up singing traditional Appalachian and Ozark folk music, studied opera, and toured the US performing their original songs, which have been praised by Washington City Paper, Sound Opinions, No Depression, and Country Queer. Erin’s most recent protest songs were featured by RockMommy, Alt Q Radio, and by LA Taco as one of the top anti-ICE themed music videos alongside Bruce Springsteen and Jesse Welles. They currently front the rock band, Ammonite. Erin has designed and presented music and songwriting programming for Chicago Public Schools, The Luce Center, The Millenium Stage, The Hirshhorn Gallery Talks, and Folger Shakespeare Library. Erin was selected for and completed 15 weeks intensive training in arts activism and arts in community through The Sanctuaries DC. They are a co-founder of This Could Go Boom!, a grassroots nonprofit that centers women, nonbinary, and gender expansive voices in music.
This workshop will take place on Saturdays: Nov. 21, 28 Dec. 5, 12, and 19 from 1:30-3 p.m. The cost is $25 per session paid in advance for the full five weeks ($125) guaranteeing a spot or $30 per session at the door.
