New Orthodox is pedal steel/voice. The band's ethos leans heavily into minimalist repetition, sonic experimentation, and lyrical insights that give way to live performances and recordings that utilize space and silence to imitate the human experience. The music is both intimate and grand, charged and claustrophobic.
Red Sunflower is a DC-based instrumental trio formed by brothers Kiyan Saifi (guitar) and Teymour Saifi (bass), with Jaden Shahin on drums. The band explores noise, textural improvisation, and experimental rock. Drawing on the energy of punk and free music, Red Sunflower favors intensity and unpredictability over convention.
Alma Laprida & Mike Kuhl
Drummer, recording ar/st and educator Mike Kuhl hails from the musically diverse city of Baltimore. Kuhl has dedicated his life to the world of drumming and sound, opening up his artistry to a mul/tude of projects. A graduate from Towson University and the University of Maryland, Kuhl has performed locally and throughout the globe alongside luminaries including Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Tony Malaby, Michael Formaneck, Drew Gress, Dave Ballou, Tim Berne, Jason Rigby, Mark Guiliana, Ellery Eskelin, Claudio Rodi/, Beach House, Arboretum, CigareTTesAfter Sex, Tom Tom Club, and the Fuse Ensemble. As a leader and co-leader, Kuhl can be heard with his groups KraL (Out of Your Head Records), Mike Kuhl Solo (Shineyboy Press,) Skullcap (Cuneiform) and The Furniture (Spanish Prayer). Kuhl is currently the jazz drum professor at Towson University. Complementing his musiclife, Kuhl enjoys studying the martial arts of Chi Gong and Bagua kung fu.
Alma Laprida (San Miguel, Argentina) is a musician and multi-disciplinary artist whose creative pursuits encompass composition, improvisation, performance, installation, instrument building and radiophonic pieces. Alma has released three solo albums, collaborated on two, and contributed to various compilations. In 2021, after a decade of creative work and life in Buenos Aires, Alma relocated to Maryland, USA, and is very active in the DC artistic scene. Besides her solo work, she’s part of Hypnotized Chickens, the Subwoofer Duo and the Bureau of Sensory Affairs, and leads the Tromba Marina Quartet.
