Mary Chicken Soup And Rice / Gaspers / Youth In Government / Tongue Scraper

Wednesday October 7 * doors at 6:30, music at 7:30 * $15 * TICKETS

Mary Chicken Soup And Rice (MCSR) is the immersive rock-and-roll theater of LA-based musician, playwright, and filmmaker Matthew Dunehoo. A channeled trickster spirit in smeared face paint and tattered suits, MCSR delivers purgatorial theatrics, part psychedelic séance, part manic episode, part communal ritual, driven by live electric guitar, squawking vocals, and alien choir backtracks. The sound swings between shimmering ethereal highs and zombie-gutter beats, landing somewhere between Eno, Siouxsie, Bowie, Cocteau Twins, Love and Rockets, Carole King, and Sesame Street.

With a moniker inspired by the Maurice Sendak/Carole King special Really Rosie, MCSR treats play and irreverence as survival tools in a beautiful, antagonistic world. Dunehoo’s background spans NYC independent theater, filmmaking, including his feature horror debut WRETCH (Night Visions, Helsinki,) and mental-health advocacy through his podcast MINDBEND. After a pair of hand-mangling accidents during the pandemic, MCSR evolved into a one-man band: painful guitar, fake candles, real spells. Debut album “Que Linda” honors his late mother Linda, who painted the cover before passing from ovarian cancer in 2024.

Gaspers is a four-piece band hailing from Frederick, MD. Formed in the winter of 2022, they collaborated to create a unique sound that blends their influences of punk, alternative, indie, post-punk, and goth.

Youth In Government - Hailing from the Washington, D.C. metro area, Youth in Government craft expansive space rock that blends the psychedelic textures of the 1970s with the atmospheric haze of shoegaze and the emotional sweep of post-rock. Equal parts cosmic and cathartic, the duo channels shimmering guitars, immersive soundscapes, and driving rhythms into songs that feel both nostalgic and forward-looking. Chris Mathews-Larsen (guitar/vocals) and Trae Tomko (drums/vocals/sampler) performed and co-produced the entirety of the band’s debut album. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Radiohead, Slowdive, the Beatles, the Cure, and the influential 4AD catalog, the band creates music that balances melody, experimentation, and atmosphere.
