Robin Holcomb / Sara Schoenbeck and Wayne Horvitz Duo

Friday November 11 * 7pm * TICKETS

Robin Holcomb is a rare talent, with a foot in the pop world and roots in the downtown avant-garde that reach back to the first generation of New York City’s downtown scene and Studio Henry mavericks. A composer, pianist, singer, and songwriter, she has performed internationally as a solo artist and the leader of various ensembles. Her most recent recording is One Way or Another (Westerlies Music: 2022). Her orchestral composition, “No Thing Lives to Itself”, was premiered by the Portland Maine Symphony in January of 2020. Her orchestral composition, “Paradise” was premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra in the fall of 2021.

She has composed extensively for dance, theater, and film. Her work has been called “staggeringly beautiful” (New York Times), “stunning” (Option), “entrancing” (Billboard), and “Achingly painful and suddenly tender” (Rolling Stone). Her work has been presented around the world, including Queen Elizabeth Hall, Carnegie Hall, Roulette, The Hong Kong International Arts Center, Earshot Jazz, the Walker Arts Center, and DTW. Collaborators have included drummer Denis Charles (Cecil Taylor), Alva Rogers, Jearlyn Steele, Arto Lindsay, Bebe Miller, Syd Straw, Marty Ehrlich, John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Lee Renaldo, and Butch Morris among others. Recordings include The Point of It All and Solos (Songlines), and John Brown’s Body (Tzadik). The Big Time, Little Three, Rockabye and Robin Holcomb are four seminal recordings of Ms. Holcomb’s songs and instrumental compositions on the Nonesuch label. Other recordings include Larks, They Crazy (Sound Aspects), Things About Comin’ My Way: A Tribute to the Music of the Mississippi Sheiks (Red Hen), Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys and Son of Rogue’s Gallery (Anti), The Anthology of American Folk Music: Revisited (Shout Factory), Burt Bacharach and Serge Gainsbourg tribute compilations (Tzadik), and Bill Frisell’s Nashville (Nonesuch).

“Satie goes to Appalachia, Morricone goes to the Knitting factory, and you, dear art-folk fan, die and go to heaven.” (Village Voice)

The Sara Schoenbeck and Wayne Horvitz Duo navigate through original tunes and improvisatory soundscapes. With feet firmly planted in a genre-less zone, electronics and an ever-expanding textural palate serve to deepen the feel of a shared melodic language.

Sara Schoenbeck and Wayne Horvitz first met as improvising musicians at the 4- day, company style “Time Flies” festival (Vancouver B.C.) in 2000. In 2004 Horvitz formed the Gravitas Quartet with Schoenbeck, Ron Miles (Trumpet) and Peggy Lee (Cello). This quartet recorded two CDs, and performed throughout Europe and North America. In 2015 Horvitz fused his ensemble Sweeter Than the Day with the Gravitas Quartet to create a septet performing compositions based on the poems of Richard Hugo. “Some Places Are Forever Afternoon” resulted in a CD, touring throughout the US, and an episode of NPR’s “Jazz Night in America”, hosted by Christian McBride.
In addition, Schoenbeck and Horvitz have performed in numerous improvised collectives, special projects, and the occasional duo concert.

In 2018, the duo Schoenbeck/Horvitz was created, with subsequent concerts in NY, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, Ann Arbor, Sacramento, Northampton, Bellingham, Edmonton, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago and Detroit. Their first CD, entitled “Cell Walk”, was released on the Songlines label in May 2020. In spring and summer of 2022, Schoenbeck/Horvitz resumes its post-covid touring schedule with concerts in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.
