Rhizome presents a great deal of programming that centers on improvisation on the part of the performers. From avant-garde jazz, which may involve improvising within pre-determined structural elements and in a context of jazz lineage, to so-called free improvisation, a stab at pure presence in which all decisions are made on the spot by players highly attuned to one another.... This camp will introduce participants to the art of improvisation. We will use games (including theatre-based improv games) and other structured settings to allow improvisational instincts to flourish. The goals of the camp are to have fun together, to cultivate listening skills, to experience the joys and difficulties of creative participation in a group, to gain exposure to highly creative strains of musical expression, and to gain confidence for gracefully handling what life puts in our paths. Instrumental or vocal experience helpful but not required. Ages 12 and up (younger students possible at the discretion of the instructor).
